This week was so much fun. IM planning my tour, (dates are slowly locking in) trying to balance my budget (BROKE), and keep my electric on and my kid fed. The FUN stuff....
This week I have been practicing for my DIRTY FILTHY RETIREMENT TOUR! Wednesday’s at Tom’s Bullpen in Dover DE I will be practicing until the end of this month when I will be Performing at Lewinsky’s on Clinton, in Delaware City. Just over a year into this, after every show, be it a bomb or killing set, I feel like I have grown!
My time in this business has been short, but my prior experience as a musician and event coordinator have given me confidence and a presence on the stage, something that most funny guys have to work towards. In my very first stand up attempt, I dropped a video of the performance and you could clearly see I was referring to notes and looking at a script. It was a fun night for me and I actually got a few laughs. A few weeks later I began getting strange calls from someone who would become a friend, and a comedy coach of sorts. Many times while working with the guy, I could tell he didn't get my material and he insisted on changing my act into more of the act he was doing... I took what I could and incorporated it into my act, only later on to find out most of the lines were direct steals verbatim...
But even when making the best of things while all goes to shit around you requires a bit of grace, tough skin, and TRUE GRIT!
It’s funny how someone can see something in another person. And dare to encourage it. But when the student becomes the teacher, the teacher has to be wise enough to see their equal, or even someone who can rise above them. If you encourage someone, and realize you have opened the eyes of a giant greater than yourself, there should be pride.
When you encourage someone, be ready to be amazed. After all, did you spot average talent? Or extraordinary talent? Did you put your time and effort and faith in someone half heartedly? Pride will take you far by appreciating the improvements you encouraged. It’s very rewarding.
I feel like, being intimidated by someone who may very well someday outperform you, is such a negative habit that will drag you down and bleed over into or from other areas of your life. Some will lift a hand up, but never wish to see you do better than themselves. No amount of money or pretty models will get you any further in the comedy game. Just like shaming another for not meeting your wishes will not make them less of a person. If you pick a winner and they outperform you, take pride. We get everything we want by helping others get what they want. Everyone wants to laugh and pick winners! Save the attitude for those who fool you by not performing to the potential they express. There is a time and place for everything including negativity. Sorry if mine is coming out here...
I’m always going to be a student. Learning from those above and below. Everyone is on my level until you prove me otherwise. Lets Grow Together!
